For both Zane and Darby, their small town roots hold a terrible secret. Now, decades later, they've come together to build a new life. But will the past set them free or pull them under?

Zane Bigelow grew up in a beautiful, perfectly kept house in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Strangers and even Zane’s own aunt across the lake see his parents as a successful surgeon and his stylish wife, making appearances at their children’s ballet recitals and baseball games. Only Zane and his sister know the truth, until one brutal night finally reveals cracks in the facade, and Zane escapes for college without a thought of looking back...

Years later, Zane returns to his hometown determined to reconnect with the place and people that mean so much to him, despite the painful memories. As he resumes life in the colorful town, he meets a gifted landscape artist named Darby, who is on the run from ghosts of her own.

Together they will have to teach each other what it means to face the past, and stand up for the ones they love.

No one weaves a story better than Nora Roberts. This is one of the best books she has written yet. A strong female character meets the true man of her dreams. They both come from troubled pasts and did not allow it to set the course of their lives. Highly recommend!

I read this book slowly because the content was hard to take at times. With a theme of spousal and child abuse, there was a great deal of violence. Since I have been a victim of the same, it was hard for me to read the descriptions of the events in the lives of Zane, Britt and Darby. The theme is that everything looks fine on the outside, but on the inside, the part that no one sees, there is danger and emotional destruction. This is the “undercurrent.” I did enjoy reading this book that is the story of survival, redemption and the triumph of love in the face of many obstacles. Nora Roberts definitely knows how to tell a story that will pull you in and not let you go, like a rip tide of strong feelings and deep involvement in the lives of the characters. The story seemed a little long to me, with all of the details about Darby’s landscaping, but for those who enjoy gardening (I don’t), this may add to the book. My favorite character was Darby who was quirky, independent and resourceful. Zane was the best foil for her since he had learned to defend himself when attacked, whether the attack was verbal or physical. The book has four parts and each part begins with a quotation that gives the reader a clue about what will happen in that section. There were many parts that I was able to guess what was happening, so there was not a lot of mystery to the story, but there was definitely a lot of drama. This book would make a great movie for TV, on a channel like LIfetime. Readers of women’s fiction will enjoy this book, but all readers should be aware that there are descriptions of a lot of graphic violence. Disclaimer Disclosure of Material Connection: I purchased a copy of this book from Amazon, and I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions expressed are my own.

I want to thank Nora Roberts for taking on the topic of familial abuse in all forms. This book has been very healing for me in so many ways and reinforces my healing process. The blame settles on the abuser, not on the abused. This is a great read and as always, good and love triumph over evil and hate . Thank you!!!!

Oh nora roberts how l love your books and have read every single one. I loved this one set in NC my home for nearly 50 years and i am proud of my roots. I wish you had not made reference to the rebel flag in the way you did because its history. And dont get me started on gun bumper sticker. This was still a good book tho very predictable.

This was a good story, but where did the 'romance go? That is what sets Nora Roberts apart for me. I read her for the fantastic scene and character development AND the romance. She just skipped over that here. It was not worth the $16.

Another fantastic psychological thriller from Nora Roberts. I think she just keeps getting better with each novel she pens. She is one of my favorites and reading this just proved again why she continues to be one. It’s the story of family(both good and evil), survival and real love conquering all. Nora Roberts did an exceptional job of weaving a story about both spousal and child abuse. The title, Under Currents, was perfect because what everyone sees is not always what is running just under the facade. Already looking forward to the next release.

Loved this book. Many twists and turns. Yes, there was violent child abuse but it shows that all homes aren't what they appear to be on the outside. I know that personally. I recommended it for my book club so I read it again. Loved it the second time too!!

Enjoyed the topic, the fleshing of the characters. Nora Robert's paints a wonderful story. The 4 stars happened due to predictability.I knew early on that Darby's ex was going to show up.Greatly enjoyed and had trouble putting down. Would recommend.
