Latin music's all the rage in pop environs these days, so it's no surprise that it's crossing over into the young kids' entertainment world as well. Actually, bilingual Latin children's records have been available for some time (Los Lobos's "Papa's Dream," on the Music For Little People label), but it's a trend that's intensifying. Maria Del Rey's approach is to take well-known English-language kids' songs--along with a smattering of Spanish language children's favorites -- and sing them with both tongues interspersed (lyrics included.) This way, kids learn them line by line, which makes for easier assimilation. Here, for example, is "Shortnin' Bread": "Pon el sartén, ponle la tapa/Mámi te cocina un pan de manteca/Put on the skillet, put on the lid/Mama's gonna make a little shortnin' bread." Other selections include "This Little Piggy," "Old King Cole," and "Sailing, Sailing." Spanish language offerings are the familiar "De Colores" and "La Bamba," along with the lesser-known "Arroz Con Leche." Del Rey and her musical cohorts, among them a lively children's chorus, keep things rollicking along at a bouncy, engaging clip.
