US AND US ONLY is the first album the Charlatans UK have written and recorded without keyboardist Rob Collins, who died in a 1996 car accident. But old fans need not worry: They've adjusted just fine, following the '60s sensibility of Collins's psychedelic keyboards into new territory, while continuing the excavation of the mid-'60s roots rock they've been hinting at for years. The opening epic "Forever" dips that old swirling sound into a dense dub-hop that seems equally influenced by '70s noise-poets Gong and the more recent Mo' Wax-style DJ music. But the album's heart lies in cuts like the BLONDE ON BLONDE-style hard-rocker "A House Is Not a Home" and "The Blonde Waltz," a mature, John Lennon-esque acoustic soul tune. On these songs and others, the Charlatans step out from behind the wall of sound, wipe those shaggy bangs out of their eyes, and greet the world in all its weird, wondrous variety.
