Overview

Decca's Waltz Gold: 50 Great Tracks is a three-CD compilation of popular waltzes, taken from recordings made between 1958 and 2015. Naturally, the waltzes of the Strauss family are well represented, and the contributions of Johann Strauss II are especially celebrated, so "The Beautiful Blue Danube," "Tales from the Vienna Woods," "Wine, Women and Song," "Roses from the South," and the "Emperor Waltz" are de rigueur for a collection like this. Also included are Waldteufel's "Skater's Waltz," Léhar's "Merry Widow Waltz," Rosas' "Over the Waves," and many other orchestral waltzes that listeners will immediately recognize. Second only to Strauss, Tchaikovsky composed waltzes that are equally memorable, such as the waltzes from the ballets "Swan Lake" and "Sleeping Beauty," and the "Waltz of the Flowers" from "The Nutcracker," to name only a few. Since the waltz has inspired many piano compositions, waltzes by Chopin and Brahms are included, among them the famously undanceable but exciting "Minute Waltz." While many listeners will happily sample this set for familiar gems, and others may put this set on rotation for New Year's celebrations, this is essentially a handy reference tool that will make identification of less familiar waltzes possible.
