The correction officer works in jails, prisons, and reformatories, and he protects inmates and executes institutional rules and regulations. He accomplishes this by questioning inmates and performing periodic checks in their living quarters or cells for weapons, drugs, and other contraband.

The C.O. usually works eight-hour shifts on a rotating schedule. In addition, he is often likely to work weekends and holidays.
The C.O. credentials vary by local, state, and federal agency. The essential requirements are that a corrections officer is 21 years of age, is a US citizen, has a high school diploma or GED, and has a felony-free criminal background.
The C.O. may be mandated to have a bachelor�s degree in a related field or a combination of education and experience in lieu of the bachelor�s degree.
The C.O. should be in fine physical condition.
The C.O. training varies, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics,
The C.O. receives on-the-job training.
The C.O. can advance to correctional sergeant positions, where his responsibility would be supervising other correctional officers. Additional education and training can also advance the C.O. to other positions such as parole officer, probation officer, or correctional treatment specialist.
