With One Look

With One Look

by Betty Buckley

CD

Overview

It's hard to pinpoint exactly what makes this collection of pop and show tunes so appealing. Is it Buckley's classic voice? Is it the eclectic and yet seamless selection of songs by the likes of Joni Mitchell, Hank Williams Sr., and Mary Chapin Carpenter? Is it the subtle orchestration expertly arranged by Buckley and cellist Eugene Friesen? Or is it a magical mix of all combined to create a CD listenable for many years to come? Those knowing the true artistry of this great lady would probably lean towards giving her most of the credit. After all, one listen to Buckley's telling of such works as Barry Manilow's "When October Goes," Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," or Carpenter's "Come On Come On," would make one hard-pressed to focus on much more than the faultless voice that carries them, but, listen again and you are sure to appreciate the mastery of all talents involved. Standouts include Mitchell's, "River," Sondheim's "Move On," and Buckley's unique versions of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "With One Look," and "As If We Never Said Goodbye," from the musical Buckley once starred in, Sunset Boulevard. Truly, one of this singer's best.
