More than just an album built around one of the great singles of the decade, World Clique plays like a snapshot of New York City's downtown culture, circa 1990. The group -- deejays Towa Tei and Super DJ Dmitry and vocalist Lady Miss Kier Kirby -- prefigured the rise of such sampladelics as Air, Dmitri from Paris, and Stereolab. Deee-Lite employed au courant deejay techniques to ironic and often whimsical effect, and their album played like a catalog of to-the-minute dance styles. Kirby lacks the pipes to huff and puff and blow the club down, but her breathy alto is appropriately sassy on the house workouts, and her vocal curlicues are delightfully humorous on the slower numbers. However, all the planets were in perfect formation for "Groove Is in the Heart," a nearly perfect meld of driving disco, rap (supplied by Q-Tip), and funk (hello Bootsy, Maceo, and Fred). It was, and still is, the soundtrack for the world's hippest party -- and everyone's on the guest list.
