Don't attend another spec ed meeting without this book. This tells you everything you need to know to successfully navigate the special ed system and the law in place to protect your child, so your child receives a fair appropriate education. I had been to numerous meetings in the past where things sounded like they were going to be great but not much actually happened. My child ended up with a simple IEP with some random vague goals. After reading this, preparing the correct files, information etc, we came out of our first successful review meeting with the requests we asked for without any resistance. You will learn how to negotiate for what your child needs and prove they need it. How to track what is going on and insure that what is said, is done. It teaches you about testing, evaluations and how to use those to your advantage to be sure your child is learning. And it gives you an easy laymen term breakdown of special education law. It will get you organized and have your matters in order to be effective at your next IEP meeting. Being a prepared and informed parent makes you the best advocate for your child.

I haven't completed the book yet but so far it is a must for parents and advocates for children with special needs. For those involved with IEP's it can give you both legal and practical information for the whole team.It will always be with us when meeting on educational issues.

This is a must have in conjunction with the Wrightslaw Special Ed law book. Having these two and listening to their Webex training was just like being in one of their actual workshops. I learned so much and was then able to start helping other families in my area. Worth every penny!

When my son was first diagnosed with disabilities, I was desperate for information. I attended the first Wrightslaw seminar concerning advocacy I could find, and soon discovered the other materials, books and resources provided by this prolific and experienced couple. Pete and Pam Wright have dedicated their adult lives to informing parents as much as possible in laymans terms, about what to know to be empowered in the special education process. They have been very generous in providing information for free on their website www.wrightslaw.com, and in providing links to other resources that may be of assistance. At the bootcamp, I received this book as a 'primer' on how-to work the system and prepare myself. My confidence level increased enormously as my knowledge did. I consider this book the "Bible" of the special education advocacy process, as a start for anyone new to the process. Yes, information can be found for free in many other resources. However, they are providing not only the commonly known info (about law and procedure) in this book that can be found elsewhere, but their level of expertise about how to work the system gained over many years of law, advocacy, and psychology practice. Well worth the $20!

I found the previous edition of this book to be better written than this one. While there is some good information, I found the same things on several Web sites, and for free, too. This book seems very hurried. As a parent advocate, I can't really recommend this new edition. There are better choices out there.
